A Canadian expatriate has issued a cautionary message regarding the challenges of relocating to Australia amidst a cost of living crisis. Kirsty Feely, who made the move Down Under earlier this year, highlighted the dire state of the housing and job markets.
While Kirsty described her international move as one of the most enriching experiences of her life, she also acknowledged it as one of the most demanding. She advised fellow expats to embrace a frugal backpacker lifestyle initially to establish themselves and cautioned about the mandatory farm work requirements on certain visas.
In a TikTok video, Kirsty shared some candid insights about the Australian relocation experience: “I want to share some truths about moving to Australia. Yes, it’s incredibly amazing, and the videos showcasing its beauty are accurate. However, there are also some significant challenges.”

Kirsty emphasized that rental availability and affordability in Sydney are currently at crisis levels, with over a third of renters in the city spending more than 30 percent of their monthly income on housing expenses. She continued, “The housing situation and job search can be quite challenging, depending on where you’re looking. If you’re coming for a year of fun and to make friends, housing can be quite a mild crisis, regardless of the hotspot—whether it’s Byron Bay, Bondi, or the Gold Coast.”
Regarding job hunting, she noted, “The job search can be tough, especially in smaller beach towns. You’re likely to have better luck in larger cities.” Kirsty offered a reality check, reminding people that their life and problems follow them even after moving abroad. “Many people expect their life to change dramatically in a new place, but it’s still you; you’re just in a different location.”

Upon arriving in Australia, Kirsty adopted a backpacker lifestyle to get by and save money. She acknowledged the positive aspects of this experience, such as forming meaningful connections and creating cherished memories. However, she also emphasized that it wasn’t the permanent life she aspired to lead in Australia.
Lastly, Kirsty mentioned that farm work is challenging but often required for certain visas. “If you’re Canadian, you’ll need to complete three months of farm work to extend your visa by another two years. There’s no way around it unless a company sponsors you.”
In summary, Kirsty Feely shared her candid observations about the realities of moving to Australia, emphasizing the housing crisis, job market challenges, and the need for temporary farm work on specific visas. She also reminded aspiring expats that personal growth and adaptation are key aspects of the journey.
