Daniel Andrews faced a humiliating setback as golf enthusiasts rejected his bid to join one of Melbourne‘s most prestigious clubs. The former Victorian Premier, known for his passion for golf, had a close associate, Max Beck, discreetly inquire about the possibility of his membership at the Portsea Golf Club. However, Andrews received a clear and uncompromising message that not only were his chances of joining nonexistent, but he wouldn’t even be permitted to submit a membership application.

The resistance stems from lingering resentment on the Mornington Peninsula over Andrews’ decision to include the region in metropolitan lockdowns during the Covid pandemic, despite being 70km away from Melbourne CBD. Mark Allen, a former professional golfer, affirmed that the community’s anger remains palpable, emphasizing that forgiveness is elusive.

This sentiment was reportedly widely discussed at the Sorrento Hotel, where members from various clubs expressed a united front against Andrews joining any golf club in the area. The decision-making process appeared straightforward, with an overwhelming consensus leading to a swift rejection of his candidacy.

Max Beck, a friend and supporter of Andrews, criticized the narrow-minded attitude of the club members, expressing disappointment at their failure to assess Andrews based on his golfing skills and personality rather than his political beliefs. Beck argued that Andrews, with a handicap under 10, is a skilled and pleasant golfer, and his political affiliations should be irrelevant to his golf club membership.

Despite Beck’s defense, Andrews continues to be a divisive figure on the Mornington Peninsula, with some residents describing him as “toxic.” His history in the region, marked by a 2021 injury in Sorrento and a 2013 car accident, further adds to the controversy. While Andrews currently plays at Kingston Heath Golf Club, his desire to join a Mornington Peninsula club faces significant resistance.
