American ‘Vegan McDonald’s’ Chain, Mr. Charlie’s, Arrives in Sydney’s Redfern
- Mr. Charlie’s, the US burger chain known as the ‘vegan version of McDonald’s,’ is opening its first Australian location in Redfern, Sydney, on September 30. While not affiliated with McDonald’s, it has been serving plant-based fast food in the US since 2022.
- With Australia having a significant vegan and vegetarian population, Mr. Charlie’s menu includes vegan versions of McDonald’s classics like the ‘not a hamburger,’ ‘not a chicken sandwich,’ ‘BigChuck burger,’ fries, and nuggets.

The fast food chain has earned rave reviews from vegans, vegetarians and even celebrities including singer Lizzo
- They offer a ‘Frowny Meal’ that includes a choice of Not a Hamburger or Not a Cheeseburger with two nuggets, mini fries, and a drink.
- Despite its sad-face logo, Mr. Charlie’s motto is all about turning frowns upside down, and it has garnered praise from vegans, vegetarians, and celebrities, including singer Lizzo.
- The Mr. Charlie’s team is excited to bring their ‘vibrant and fresh’ energy to Redfern and is committed to aiding indigenous communities through partnerships with charities and brand partners.
- While many were thrilled about the news, some Melbournians expressed disappointment that the chain didn’t choose Melbourne as its first Australian location.
- Overall, the opening of Mr. Charlie’s in Redfern has generated excitement and anticipation among Australians.

While Mr Charlie’s is not affiliated with McDonald’s, it had been satisfying the fast food cravings of meat-free takeaway lovers in the states since it opened its doors in LA in 2022
