The unveiling of the ten most perilous cities in the United States for the year 2023 has brought some surprising revelations. Monroe, Louisiana, had maintained its position as the most crime-ridden city over the past two years but has now been displaced to second place by a newcomer.

According to research conducted by Security Gauge, a small suburban area in Birmingham, Alabama, with a population of just 27,000, has claimed the unenviable title of the city with the highest per capita crime rate this year. Bessemer, situated in Jefferson County, has officially earned the reputation of being the most dangerous place to reside in the United States, based on proportional crime rates.

Security Gauge’s assessment involved ranking the top 100 cities with the highest crime rates in the United States, all of which had populations of at least 25,000 residents. Data on violent crimes such as homicide, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault were collected from all 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country and were contextualized per 1,000 people.

Here are the top ten most dangerous cities in the US for 2023:

  1. Bessemer, Alabama: Bessemer claimed the top spot for 2023, with a staggering 33.18 violent crimes per 1,000 population. Residents in this city face a one in 30 chance of falling victim to a violent crime.
  2. Monroe, Louisiana: With a one in 38 chance of experiencing a violent crime, Monroe ranks second on the list of dangerous cities, despite its apparent incongruity as a city known for museums and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
  3. Saginaw, Michigan: Located 100 miles from Detroit, Saginaw has a violent crime rate of 25.1 per 1,000 residents, gaining notoriety for a recent street party incident.
  4. Memphis, Tennessee: Tied for third place with Saginaw, Memphis, with its population of around 700,000, is known for its music scene and ranks high for homicides, with some attributing this trend to political leadership and police morale.
  5. Detroit, Michigan: Detroit, with a population of 620,000, reports a violent crime rate of 23 per 1,000 residents, making it a consistent contender for high crime rankings due to urban decay and population decline.
  6. Birmingham, Alabama: Birmingham, closely connected to the crime woes of Bessemer, ranks sixth with a violent crime rate of 20.6 per 1,000 residents and a one in 49 chance of becoming a victim.
  7. Pine Bluff, Arkansas: Pine Bluff, in Jefferson County, ranks seventh, with a violent crime rate of 20.5 per 1,000 residents and a higher crime density compared to the state average.
  8. Little Rock, Arkansas: Just 40 miles northwest of Pine Bluff, Little Rock comes in eighth, reporting 20.2 violent crimes per 1,000 population and a one in 49 chance of being a victim.
  9. Alexandria, Louisiana: Alexandria, in northern Louisiana, has a violent crime rate of 18.8 per 1,000 residents, resulting in a one in 58 chance of falling victim to a violent crime.
  10. Cleveland, Ohio: Cleveland rounds out the top ten.
