The proprietor of a massage parlor in an upscale Sydney neighborhood has defended the decision to prominently display a sign in the shop window reading ‘non-sexual’ in capital letters. Wannisa Piyatrakul, the owner of La Massage Thai Remedial & Day Spa in Mosman on the exclusive Lower North Shore, attributed the need for the direct message to unwanted advances from certain individuals shortly after the establishment opened three months ago.

Wannisa Piyatrakul (pictured), owner of La Massage Thai Remedial & Day Spa in Mosman in the Sydney’s exclusive Lower North Shore, blamed seedy men for forcing her to place a stark message (pictured below) in her shop window after dozens of them started asking for sexual favours when the establishment opened three months ago

Ms. Piyatrakul explained that the shop received numerous inappropriate requests from men, both through phone calls and in-person inquiries. In response, she felt compelled to put up the sign to ensure a welcoming environment for female patrons. Emphasizing that her establishment is focused on professional massage services, she wanted to make it clear that any other expectations were unwarranted.

One local said the sign was ‘disturbing’ but many others defended the small business owner, claiming it would help keep her staff safe from unwanted sexual advances
The same sign was also displayed prominently at the front desk to reinforce the message. However, a local resident expressed concern about the sign’s placement on a community Facebook page, deeming it ‘disturbing’ due to its eye-level visibility for schoolchildren passing by.
While many Mosman residents supported the sign, acknowledging its importance in protecting staff from unwelcome advances, Ms. Piyatrakul, upon seeing the community’s response, acknowledged the oversight regarding potential exposure to children. She expressed a willingness to reconsider the sign’s placement in the window to address any concerns raised by parents.

This incident follows a similar situation in Cairns, where a masseuse, Darunrat Chansopha, faced inappropriate demands from patrons seeking a ‘happy ending.’ In response, she displayed a clear sign in her waiting room stating, ‘No happy endings – excellent massage only,’ highlighting the challenges faced by small businesses in maintaining a professional environment.
